The Ashdod Municipal Library, named after Yosef Meirhoff

The Ashdod Municipal Library, named after Yosef Meirhoff, is the public library of Ashdod. It is located near the B neighborhood center in the northern part of the city. The library was established in 1971, thanks to the donation of philanthropists Rebecca and Yosef Meirhoff from Baltimore and the Jewish Agency. The library was designed by architect Yitzhak Perlstein.

The library operates branches at the Comprehensive High School V’ in neighborhood 11 in the southern part of the city, as well as at the “Beit HaOleh” center in neighborhood 6.

In 2020, the library was renovated with the support of the Ashdod Foundation and a donation from the Meirhoff Foundation. At the beginning of 2020, the Ashdod Municipality began renovating the library’s interior with a budget of 3 million NIS, with assistance from the Ashdod Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and an additional donation from the Meirhoff family. The renovation took about two years and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It officially reopened at the end of 2021.

Since the renovation, some of the library’s services are also available online, such as book and digital audio book borrowing requests, checking stock availability, creating accounts, and extending borrowing periods. The library also provides access to the National Digital Library.
